On the evening of January 14th, Nie Weiping, 9th dan, passed away at the age of 74. In the 1980s and 1990s, he was considered one of the strongest masters in the world, taking several second places in major international tournaments, including the inaugural Ying Cup. If you’ve seen the film “The Duel,” you’ll probably remember him.
Nie Weiping played a key role in popularizing Go in China, heading a major school that trained many professionals. We offer our condolences to his students, family, and friends. This is a great loss for all of Chinese Go!
